Become a Special Olympics Volunteer Swim Coach

The San Francisco Sea Lions Special Olympics Swim Team needs help to teach

swimming to special needs individuals.

We meet weekly on Tuesday evenings at SAVA Pool, Wawona St. & 19th Ave. from

7:00 – 8:30pm. Our season starts at the end of January and continues through mid-June.

Our need for coaches is on-going and we will orient and mentor new coaches throughout the season. We divide our practice into two sessions. The first session is for non-swimmers and those learning to swim(B group), and the second group for those that swim the front crawl and are continuing to learn and master other strokes(A group). Our greatest need is for volunteers in our first session – 7:00 – 7:45pm., as we find

working one to one with our beginners to be most effective.

Our requirements to become a volunteer are simple:

- Can swim and are comfortable in the water.

* - Be willing to commit Tuesday evenings (7:00 – 8:30pm) to the Sea Lions

- Be available to coach for one of our three swim meets

- Like people in general and have patience to work with and assist

our athletes across a broad range of age and disability.

If you are interested and/or have questions, please contact Donna Kempner at

djkphoto@pacbell.net , phone 415-412-2045 or Greg McKinney at gmckinne@pacbell.net.

There will be two volunteer orientation meetings at the Sava Pool on the following

Tuesdays at 7:00 Tuesday, January 17th and Tuesday, January 24th . Please come to

one of these important meetings.

Please go to the Special Olympics Northern California website sonc.org, to review the

Volunteer Guidelines. You are welcome to participate before committing formally. We

are happy to have volunteers any time during our season.

Enjoy the reward of knowing that you have participated in donating your valuable time to a community that is often overlooked, and is appreciative beyond measure. Your time

and commitment to the S.F. Sea Lions swimmers enriches lives immeasurably.

*High School Student Volunteers – 6:45 – 7:45 pm is fine given homework, etc.,

School required volunteer hours can be met with your consistent participation.

We have 21 practices, beginning January 31 st and running thru mid- June. We have a

few swim meets as well. Total volunteers hours, 40 – 55 depending on participation.
