Outreach360 Virtual Impact Program [Spanish Speaking Students)

Name:

Outreach360 Virtual Impact Program

Fall Internship for Spanish Students

When: Each Saturday from September 12 - November 28, two hours per Saturday.   Eastern Daylight Time: 10:00 A.M. - 12:00 PM or 4:00 P.M. - 6:00 P.M.

What:

The first hour of the Saturday internship is "Service". Volunteers have structured English conversations with Outreach360 students from Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic. Outreach360 students are of varying ages and English ability.  Outreach360 will have structured conventional topics to choose from, with visual support. The content of the conversation will vary depending on the age and English level of our students. Interns with an interest in health or science are encouraged to have conversations sharing health/science topics and vocabulary.

The second hour of the Saturday internship is "Learning". Interns will have structured Spanish conversations with our students.  The Spanish conversation will feature a different Nicaraguan and Dominican cultural topic each week - food, geography, culture, tourism, health care, nature/agriculture, local slang/expressions, holidays and traditions, art and dance, etc.

Classes will be held using Zoom rooms, with Outreach360 leadership and support. Conversations will be group conversations, with several students and 2-3 interns in each conversation.

Interns will be divided by Spanish level - Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced/Conversational, and Fluent.

Why:

The mission of Outreach360 is to inspire and empower people to reach their full potential and give back by expanding educational, leadership, and service opportunities. Outreach360 students in the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua have the opportunity to receive free education in the areas of English, math, science, and literacy.  This fall internship gives our students the opportunity to practice their English with native English speakers and gives our interns the opportunity to practice their Spanish with native Spanish speakers. This program is not intended to be a "class"; it is more an opportunity to practice what is learned in formal language classes.

Who:

Outreach360 is a non-profit organization working with underserved youth in the Dominican Republic since 1994 and Nicaragua since 2010. Nearly 25,000 international volunteers, mostly high school and college students, have joined us over the years for service-learning cultural trips. Over 100 virtual interns joined us during the summer of 2020 and had an experience similar to an in-country experience:

Being able to virtually intern through Outreach360 has been amazing, and just as impactful as the in-country experiences prior. I hope to once again visit in person, but I know that these students are getting a great education thanks to volunteers all around the world who join through virtual classrooms. Brandon Roy, Pennsylvania, Summer 2020 Virtual Intern
