The ESM Equity Program

After years of building our academic mentorship business, we’ve decided to tackle one of our long-held goals: providing pro bono support to students from communities that are underrepresented in higher education. Throughout the 2021 calendar year, ESM mentors will devote at least 10% of their collective time to working with scholarship students in our equity program. ESM will select students to receive free one-on-one college counseling, test prep, and academic tutoring from ESM mentors throughout the entirety of 2022.

Who should apply? Students should apply if they meet the follow criteria:

  • Looking to be a first generation college student (i.e. parents did not graduate from college) or identifies as belonging to a race or ethnicity which is underrepresented in US colleges

  • Currently enrolled in high school

  • Graduation year 2023

  • Intends on applying to college in the US

How do I apply? Applications for the 2021-2022 academic year are open as of October 1, 2021 and will close on December 1, 2021. When the application opens, it will have four components:

  1. The completed application form— You will need to fill out some demographic information and complete four short answer questions.

  2. Your current high school transcript — An unofficial pdf copy is sufficient. The transcript will show your entire high school academic, from freshman year to the current academic term.

  3. A video cover letter — Create a 2-3 minute video in which you tell us about yourself. We are especially curious to hear about: -Your goals for the end of high school -Which colleges interest you the most and why -Your biggest obstacle in attending and graduating from college -How this scholarship would help you achieve your goals If for any reason you cannot complete the video cover letter you may opt to arrange an online interview with an ESM mentor.

  4. Recommendations — You must submit one academic recommendation (teacher, counselor, academic advisor) and one personal recommendation (family member, supervisor, community leader). No additional recommendations will be accepted. Recommendations may be in any language, but they must be typed and submitted as a .docx or .pdf file. Recommendations will be submitted by the recommender by email to equity@esmprep.com. Detailed instructions for the recommender can be found here.
